Correlates of Religious Giving in Six Protestant Denominations

Donahue, Michael J. "Correlates of Religious Giving in Six Protestant Denominations." Review of Religious Research, 36, no. 2 (December 1994): 149-157.

Donahue examined survey data from a representative sample of active laity in Disciples of Christ, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Southern Baptist, United Church of Christ, and Methodist churches. He found that giving to one's own congregation is strongly influenced by income levels and the religiousness of one's spouse, while giving to other religious charities is more influenced by personal religiosity. In contrast, the author found that overall charitable giving is related to education and income. (SM)
