Formation as a Unifying Concept of Theological Education

Schner, George P. "Formation as a Unifying Concept of Theological Education," Theological Education 21 (Spring 1985): 94-113.

Theological education as formation is both tautological and arbitrary. What is the role of information in a process conceived as formation? Schner argues that what is most important to Christian theology and education is not the adoption of experience as the leading element but the facility to critique such a choice as one among many -- and to modulate one's speech and action accordingly.
