Mass Should Be a Come-As-You-Are Party

Garcia-Rivera, Alex. “Mass Should Be a Come-As-You-Are Party.” US Catholic 60(8):32-34, 1995.

Reflecting on the desire to pray for his ill father in public worship, Alex Garcia-Rivera compares the orderliness of the modern post-Vatican II Mass with the “messiness” of worship at the Cathedral of San Fernando to affirm the latter as a place of true community and spiritual renewal. The modern Mass is a banquet-without-sacrifice of cheap unity, while the Mass at San Fernando is a sacrifice-become-a-banquet where a sick and broken society can gather with the larger invisible community of saints in prayers of lament that end in thanksgiving and joy. San Fernando provides a place where the private blends with the public to offer authentic renewal, unity and celebration.
