Processions: The Soul of the City

Garcia, David. “Processions: The Soul of the City.” Modern Liturgy 25, no. 9 (1998):16-18.

Rector David Garcia of the San Fernando Cathedral contends that the power of public religious processions transforms participants in their faith journey to God and changes the dynamics of the city/community where it is held into sacred space. Since its founding in 1731 the San Fernando Cathedral has celebrated its faith in this public and transforming way through planned religious fiestas and dramas for the entire community and their families. One recent example is the story of Mexican immigrants Mario and Lupita, whose participation as Joseph and Mary in San Fernando’s La Gran Posada has transformed their individual and family life. Such public rituals make the past present and represent the ongoing story of a community’s faith and tradition.
