Religious Liberty: Catholic Struggles with Pluralism

Murray, John Courtney. Religious Liberty: Catholic Struggles with Pluralism. Four essays edited by J. Leon Hooper, S.J. Louisville, KY: Westminster/John Knox Press, 1993.

This volume collects four of John Courtney Murray's major essays on religious liberty. One essay, originally prepared in 1955 for the journal Theological Studies, "Leo XIII and Pius XII: Government and the Order of Religion," appears here for the first time. The essay, in galley proofs when it was suppressed in 1955, was to have been the culmination of ten years of intensive thinking on the church-state issue, and the last in a series of six in which Murray examined the legacy of Pope Leo XIII.
