Sacramental Preparation: A Mission Model

Garcia, David. “Sacramental Preparation: A Mission Model.” Church 13, no. 3 (1997):31-32.

Reverend David Garcia, rector of the San Fernando Cathedral in San Antonio, Texas, introduces the reader to the cathedral’s month-long Sacramental Preparation Mission, an endeavor to welcome back into full participation those not fully integrated or involved in the life of the church. Aimed primarily at Hispanics, the three-nights-a-week, four-week Mission has been a regular activity since 1987. Sessions are given in both English and Spanish and are held during the Lenten Season, culminating with Confirmations and first Eucharist celebrated on Easter Sunday (for 1998, the Mission was to be held during the Easter Season). Through the years, sessions have evolved to emphasize a more liturgical spirituality, using ritual to form participants into authentic Christian community and provide them a means for “doing ministry.”
