The University and the Common Good

Hough, Joseph C., Jr. "The University and the Common Good." In Theology and the University: Essays in Honor of John B. Cobb, Jr., eds. David Ray Griffin and Joseph C. Hough, Jr., 97-124. Albany, NY: State University of New York Press, 1991.

Hough argues that the purpose of the university is a subject of moral, and therefore theological, debate because that purpose is and has always been defined in relation to a vision of the common good of society. He outlines historical understandings of the idea of the common good and relates those to understandings of the U.S. university today, thereby raising some key questions about the relation of the university to the contemporary common good.
