The Vocation of Adolescents

Richter, Don C. "The Vocation of Adolescents." Unpublished paper. The Candler Christian Education Conference, February 1994.

In this reflection on the vocation of adolescents, Don Richter suggests that the church is called to help adolescents discern occupations in which their present and future vocations might be fulfilled. He explores the theological meaning of the term "vocation" and argues that it has largely disappeared as a concept in Christian vocabulary. He offers three strategies for reconceiving vocation in ministry with youth: to integrate "being" and "doing" in conversation with youth; to welcome youth into the world of work; and, paradoxically, to encourage youth not to work (ie, to appreciate the concept of "sabbath").
