Theological Education and the Problem of Identity

Fulkerson, Mary McClintock. "Theological Education and the Problem of Identity," Modern Theology 7 (October 1991):465-482.

Mary McClintock Fulkerson notes that publications in the 1980s discussing the crisis in theological education locate the problem in a lack of self identity. Fulkerson uses Edward Farley's works on theology, the church and theological education as a vehicle for examining how the search for identity can too easily lead to a denial of difference and inattention to social oppression. Agreeing with with poststructuralists and Marxist-feminist theorists, Fulkerson insists that a theological education that places social oppression in the foreground must "decenter" the self, and she sketches what the main thrusts of such a theological education would be.
