Drawing on contemporary theories of hermeneutics, Fiorenza seeks to undermine divisions between explanation and understanding, between professional and communicative competence, and between critique of ideology and hermeneutical retrieval. He argues that the work of religious leadership in community is to facilitate the reconstruction of communal religious identity in theory and practice. (RG)
