Visions and Values in Catholic Higher Education

Murphy, J. Patrick. Visions and Values in Catholic Higher Education. Kansas City, MO: Sheed and Ward, 1991.

J. Patrick Murphy’s book looks at the core values of five different Catholic institutions of higher education by examining each institution’s rituals and stories. Murphy first offers a context for comparing the five schools by considering the nature of colleges/universities and the creation and communication of values. He then analyzes the values expressed in each of the institutions under study (Barry University, Trinity College, Saint Mary’s of the Woods, Santa Clara University, and DePaul University). The work ends with an extensive comparison of the five Catholic campuses and the lessons that leadership can learn from the study's findings. An Afterword, by Ann O’Hara Graff describes the connection between these institutions and “the Catholic story.” (LT)
