This project promoted the Lilly Endowment-sponsored research on mainstream Protestantism conducted in the mid to late 1980s. Dorothy Bass (Chicago Theological Seminary), Barbara Wheeler (president, Auburn Theological Seminary) and Wade Clark Roof (University of Massachusetts at Amherst) together formed a panel to set guidelines and administer the disbursement of funds for this purpose. Over two years, the project awarded seventeen small grants to support the editing, printing, promoting, and sharing of research on mainline Protestantism.
