The shape of the curriculum in theological schools was, in the 1980s, one of the most perplexing questions confronting American theological educators. How could seminary studies be reordered so that theological schools might be able to introduce students to relevant new forms of knowledge as well as the older disciplines? What subjects rightly belong in the curriculum? These seemingly simple queries resulted in a cycle of studies on these issues over several years in the early eighties. John Dillenberger was invited by Emory University to present the findings of his research on the arts in theological education at a consultation in October 1985. Thirty-five seminary professors and administrators from diverse schools in the US attended. The conversations contributed to the continuing reform of the seminary course of studies. (KA)
