Alice Gallin researched the history of American Catholic higher education during the period 1960 and the 1990s. In addition to producing several publications on the subject, the project supported efforts to convene scholars to discuss Gallin's work as it was being written. Gallin's publications discusse the transfer of power at Catholic colleges and universities from religious congregations to lay trustees, problems with identity in Catholic higher education since the 1960s, and compromises between bishops and college presidents concerning Ex Corde Ecclesiae.
