Christian Smith of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill assessed the need for and feasibility of a major empirical study in order to examine the religious practices and commitments of American youth. Smith explored how the religious practices and commitments of the youth influence their capacity to negotiate growing up in today’s cultural context.

Smith produced (1) a comprehensive survey of existing projects and organizations related to American youth and religion, (2) a comprehensive summary report on extant datasets on American youth that contain significant religion variables, (3) an annotated bibliography of the important works in the major empirical and theoretical literature on American youth and religion, and (4) three resource-guide summary reports.
