The University of Massachusetts received a planning grant in collaboration with Hartford Seminary to study the major issues facing mainline Protestant churches in the United States. The University of Massachusetts researchers focused the development of their study in five areas: 1) they explored mainline Protestant institutional arrangements; 2) they identified research and topical themes; 3) they furthered research already underway in this area and participated in international exchanges on mainline Protestant themes; 4) they cultivated interest at the University in mainline Protestantism as an academic topic of study; and 5) they initiated bibliographic and database research.(MG)
