Planning grant for research on musical cultures of Christian congregations

The “Planning grant for research on musical cultures of Christian congregations” expanded the research Linda J. Clark initiated on the role of hymnody in the maintenance of congregational religious identity. This project assisted congregations and musicians in understanding their religious identities as uniquely expressed through the music of their worship. Clark approached the methodology from a traditional research angle and instituted educational programs within the School of Theology to mutually train musicians and congregations. The School of Theology implemented a year-long series of courses in their music program, and Clark organized two day-long seminars for local churches that included students and the public. Finally, the School of Theology offered its students opportunities to research the history of liturgical studies.(MG)
