Planning Grant: women-church and similar support groups: effects on participants and congregations in the mainline Protestant and Roman Catholic traditions

Project Number:

End Date:
Sat, 06/30/1990

Allison Stokes led the Hartford Seminary inquiry into the effects of new types of women’s groups (defined as groups that “included women in liturgy and formal leadership, and/or empowering women to develop their own group worship experiences in addition to or as a preferable alternative to regular congregational services”) on mainline Protestant and Catholic congregations. They examined what impact such groups had on the vitality of congregational life, especially that which had historically been male dominated. This project prepared the groundwork for later, comprehensive research. In this planning stage, they identified groups to be studied, developed questions and methodology, and gathered historical, theological and sociological perspectives for further reflection.(MG)
