This action research project developed a guidebook of resources for lay contemplative formation in the Christian context, based on an assessment of existing formation programs in both Catholic and Protestant communities. Essays in the books include "guidelines to discernment," "principles of lay contemplative formation" and an introduction to the guidebook itself. Research team visits were made to a series of lay formation centers/sites across the United States. These sites include: the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, NM; the Desert House of Prayer in Tucson, AZ; Our Lady of Solitude House of Prayer in Black Canyon, AZ; the Shalem Institute for Spiritual Formation in Bethesda, MD; Contemplative Outreach of Butler, NJ; Chrysalis House, in Warwick, NY; Pendle Hill in Wallingford, PA; John Main Christian Meditation Center in Rosell, IL; Osage Monastery in Sand Springs, OK; Little Portion Monastery in Eureka Springs, AK; Shantivanum in Easton, KS; and Lebh Shomea in Sarita, TX. Information from these site visits, along with other resource materials form the foundation for the guidebook. (MH)
