William Schweiker of the University of Chicago Divinity School led a group of biblical scholars and theologians to examine the spiritual dynamics of the ownership and possession of property in personal and social life. Schweiker and associates aimed to show the contribution of biblical-theological reflection to the public debate about property and possession; besides, the team also aimed at beginning to fashion a new form of theology and culture.

Schweiker and associates argued that the dynamic of property and possession can be seen as a unifying factor in culture and is found not only in economic life but also in moral systems, law and communication. The team sought to address the question of how to think theologically about culture in a methodological manner.
