Phillip Hammond and associates planned a network of studies on mainstream Protestantism in the Western United States. Working in cooperation with Eldon Ernst, Barbara Brown Zikmund, Edwin Gaustad, W. Clark Roof, John Shelton Reed and Grant Wacker, Hammond developed a three-year proposal for the studies to be conducted by faculty from the University of California at Santa Barbara and the Graduate Theological Union. The planning team proposed that a study of the Church in the West could provide important socio-historical information about religion in America not available from studies that focused primarily on New England and the 18th Century frontier.
