With the assistance of the University of Virginia, James Davison Hunter and his associates researched religious leaders and the institutions and people they serve. In order to conduct his research, Hunter interviewed key religious leaders and gathered archival material in North America and Europe. Hunter tied previously assembled historical demographic and survey data together with his own research. His work formed an empirically-based understanding of the place, role, and impact of religious elites in public life. Based on his findings, Hunter published an informative book entitled "Culture Wars: The Struggle to Define America."
