Ronal F. Thiemann of Harvard Divinity School directed this project to build on the work of the Center for the Study of Public Life of the Harvard Divinity School. The Center was established to assist the Divinity School in effectively relating theology to critical issues of public life mainly through curriculum change, appointment of new faculty, visiting-scholars program, and five-interdisciplinary seminars. These seminars were: (1) the Seminar on Religion and International Relations, (2) the Seminar on Family and Family Policy, (3) the Harvard Seminar on Environment, (4) the Seminar on Business, Values, and the Economy, and (5) the Urban Studies Seminar.

Thiemann directed the Center to develop six new course curricula relating religious scholarship to public life. A visiting scholar and a visiting practitioner in residence were funded through this grant. The Center initiated a university-wide senior faculty working group on civil society. It established a Summer Leadership Institute for clergy engaged in urban economic development and initiated a two-year executive session on values based public leadership.
