Stewart Hoover examined the ways in which religious news is covered by the “secular” press. This study was continuation of an earlier grant (#900491). Hoover clarified the role and function of religion coverage by newspapers through interviews with key religion journalists and resource people from the media, the academy, and the world of religion. A pubic conference on the theme of “Religion and the News: A National Conference” was held at Columbia’s Kellogg conference center attended by approximately 150 religious leaders, journalists, media decision-makers and academics. As part of the study, the Gallup organization administered a national survey exploring the topic of coverage of religion in the news media; it found the level of satisfaction with the coverage to be low but a higher level of religiosity and religious interest among the audience.
