Strategic Information for Theological Schools

Graduate theological schools, like much of higher education, face an increasingly difficult financial and institutional environment. Because of their distinctive characteristics, however, these schools cannot easily apply standard analytical tools and financial management strategies generally used by other higher-education institutions. Also, theological schools are often led by administrators and trustees with limited financial and strategic management training and experience. This project addressed these critical issues by creating a model for providing strategic financial information to accredited graduate theological schools on an annual basis and in a form usable by their leaders. Past data collected by the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) was used to develop a set of indicators of institutional stability and growth that might serve as early-warning signals of disequilibrium and decline. Using these indicators, ATS can provide schools with annual strategic financial information reports, based on a school's own data. (SM)
