Deeply concerned with the looming internal collapse of mainstream Protestant churches, Roof and McKinney collaborated on the study of factors that contributed to liberal Protestantism’s decline. Their work included qualitative assessments and interviews with several mainline Protestant congregations, as well as an historical synthesis of other current writings. They examined three general factors contributing the mainstream Protestantism’s decline: 1) congregational demographics; 2) personal and moral lifestyle issues in the congregation’s immediate social context; and 3) patterns of religious involvement. Weighing the relative importance of those factors, they synthesized their findings, along with suggestions for revitalization, in a book.(MG)
