Survey of Characteristics of Endowed Presbyterian Churches

Project Number:
Start Date:

This project had two goals: (1) to gather basic descriptive information about the constituency of The National Association of Endowed Presbyterian Churches (NAEPC), and (2) to use that information to develop a strategic plan that would allow NAEPC to meet the needs of endowed Presbyterian churches. Under the guidance of Dean Hoge, 142 Presbyterian congregations with endowments of at least $500,000 were surveyed by telephone. Focus groups were conducted by Loren Mead in five congregations. The survey revealed the size of the endowments, policies concerning the management of these funds and the use of income generated from them, the legal context in which each endowment operates, and the relationship between endowments and individual giving.
