This endeavor, conducted by The Jewish Theological Seminary of America, examined the current state of the synagogue in American Jewish communal life. By gathering data and assessing several synagogues, Neil Gillman and his research team discovered a need for scholarly research and writing in the area of synagogue life. The data collected by the research team was presented and assessed at a Conference on “The Future of American Synagogue” held at the Seminary in New York. This conference provided encouragement for the research team to compile an anthology of essays published in The American Synagogue.
