Through a series of six initiatives, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary recruited, trained, and retained cohorts of twenty-five highly qualified students per year over the five-year grant period. Entitled the “Jonathan Edwards Program for Congregational Ministry in New England”, the program included components of recruitment, scholarships, mentoring, placement and lifelong learning.
The six initiatives of the program were: (1) a Research initiative to survey the religious scene in New England; (2) a Recruitment initiative to attract a cohort of twenty-five highly qualified students per year who were interested in exploring ministry in New England; (3) a Scholarship initiative which funded these students through the completion of their degree programs; (4) a Mentoring initiative which enabled each student to work in a New England congregation under a seasoned pastor; (5) a Placement initiative which enabled each student to receive specialized assistance to find a position in a New England congregation; and (6) a Continuing Education initiative to provide scholarship recipients opportunities for life long learning and networking.
